A weekly letter about the zinc bar

Au Bon Zinc writes about the ordinary French café with a zinc counter: the corner bistro where regulars stand at the bar, not restaurants and not specialty coffee shops. The letter goes out every Friday morning through Substack, and every past issue can be read on the site. Its stance is to treat these cafés as living heritage, without folklore or easy nostalgia, while documenting how many have shut over the past century.

Six recurring sections per issue

Each issue follows the same structure: a café of the week that is still holding on, a café that is closing and the plain reasons why, such as rent, fatigue or the end of a lease, an object of the counter like the saucer or the Faema E61 machine, a postcard from a café outside Paris, a line overheard at the bar, and a short section of café figures. The site insists that every place it names is real and verifiable, with photos credited.

City guides and a map

Beyond the letter, the agents built guides to genuine counter cafés in Paris, including one organized by arrondissement, and in Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Lille, Toulouse, Nantes, Strasbourg and Grenoble, where La Table Ronde dates from 1739. An investigation into why these cafés disappear and a map of the places covered round it out. The site presents the weekly letter as free, and a monthly subscription is listed at $4.
