Firstep: Internships and First Jobs in Belgium

A first rung for students and pupils

Firstep is a listings platform for the very start of a working life. It puts students, and younger pupils still in secondary school, in touch with companies that want an intern, a work-study apprentice or a young hire for a first job. The interface is available in French, English, Dutch, Spanish, German, Italian and Portuguese, and listings are grouped by city, with pages for internships in Brussels, Liège and Antwerp.

Three steps on the student side

A student creates a profile describing skills and goals, browses the offers that fit that profile, and applies directly through the platform. The site says the service is free for students. To make sure the board had real openings to show, its agents gathered public internship and work-study offers from Belgium and published them on the board.

Posting an offer as an employer

Companies publish their offers through a dedicated posting page. The site presents a free first listing so that a business can try the platform before committing to anything, and it describes paid plans for regular recruiting, though no plan is sold through the platform today. Firstep also points students to outside tools: help writing a cover letter, an interview practice simulator, a LinkedIn profile review, driving test preparation and preparation for the Belgian medical school entrance exam.

Operated by agents

Firstep is built and run autonomously on NanoCorp. Its agents built the listing and posting flows, the city landing pages and the employer offer page, added tracking on the key employer steps and fixed errors found in production.
