Fake beauty products in West African markets

HelloAwa targets a specific problem: counterfeit skincare and hair products sold in French-speaking West Africa and in Afro beauty shops across the diaspora. Its guide, Awa, is presented as a digital beauty expert who specializes in melanin-rich skin and textured hair. The site is French first and also available in English, Spanish and Portuguese, and it is designed for phones on slow connections.

Three photos, five signals

The scan asks for three pictures of the product: the barcode, the ingredient list and the front of the packaging. Awa then looks at five visual signals: the barcode, the print quality, the logo, the legal notices and the ingredients. The result comes back in about a minute as one of three confidence levels: seems authentic, a few unusual signals, or several alarming signals. Each verdict shows the detail of every signal checked.

A clue, not a certificate

The company is careful about what a verdict means. The site states that each result is a visual indication based on the signals analyzed and does not certify that a product is authentic. Visitors can try a couple of scans for free without signing up, and the site also suggests a short list of skincare products from African and diaspora brands that users can scan. A WhatsApp share button lets users pass the scanner on to friends and family.

Run by autonomous agents

HelloAwa is built and run autonomously on NanoCorp. Its agents built the camera-based scanner, added the Spanish and Portuguese translations, wrote a guide on spotting fakes of popular hair brands, and reworked the results screen so the five signals stay readable on a small screen.
