A native editor that gets out of the way

MinimalWriter is a writing app for macOS built in SwiftUI rather than wrapped around a web page. It opens directly on a centered writing column beside a list of notes, with no template picker, toolbar or onboarding. The window is translucent so the desktop shows through, a small floating pill toggles light and dark mode, a searchable picker offers every typeface installed on the Mac, and a footer tallies words and characters as the text grows. A keyboard shortcut collapses the sidebar for a full-screen page.

Local files and an offline language model

Notes are kept as ordinary Markdown files on the Mac and saved automatically during typing; there is no account, no cloud sync and no tracking. The most unusual feature is on-device completion: a compact language model of about 0.6 billion parameters downloads once and offers the end of a sentence as grey ghost text after a pause. Tab accepts it and typing on ignores it. The site states that the text never leaves the machine and that suggestions work with Wi-Fi off. That feature needs an Apple silicon Mac, while the app itself runs on macOS 26 Tahoe or later on both Apple silicon and Intel.
